Science yr8- Energy Flashcards
What is energy?
The ability to do work
What is matter?
everything that has mass and takes up space (volume)
What is energy measured in?
Joules (J) always capital J
-named after James Joules (famous physicist)
-eg: Kilojoules, from food
What are the steps to solve a problem? (in science)
- Form a hypothesis
- Test the hypothesis
- Collect the data
- analyze the data
- make a logical conclusion
- repeat
What is the independent variable?
The thing you change
What is the dependent variable?
The thing you measure
What is the controlled variable?
The thing that you keep the same
What is the rule of energy?
It cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed from one form of energy to other
(Energy is converted or transformed, it is never lost or made)
What is Kinetic energy?
Motion/moving objects
What is Light energy?
Energy from the Sun
What is Heat energy?
Energy that is transferred from one body to another as the result of a difference in temperature
What is Sound energy?
It comes from vibrations moving through something.
What is Electrical energy?
The flow of electrons through a wire
What is Gravitational energy?
The energy stored by objects in a gravitational field
What is Elastic energy?
Energy stored in objects when they are under temporary strain, such as being stretched or squashed
