Science- Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Removes…?
Carbon dioxide, waste products
Blood volume? (Men,women)
Men- 5 L
Women- 4-5L
Circulatory system made up of…?
Blood, blood vessels, heart
Blood vessels…? (Examples)
Aorta, arteries, arterioles, capillaries (oxygenated blood)
Superior+inferior vena cava, veins, venules (deoxygenated blood)
Main three: arteries, capillaries, veins
Valves prevent?
Backflow
Heart is made up of?
Muscles
Components of blood
Plasma, blood cells( red,white, platelets)
Plasma
Clear yellowish fluid. Contains=proteins, antibodies, hormones, clot forming proteins, minerals.
55% of blood is plasma.
Red blood cells
Carry oxygen from lungs to rest of body, carbon dioxide to lungs where exhaled. Formed in bone marrow. Also in liver and spleen. Protein molecules (hemoglobin) carries oxygen to capillaries and carbon dioxide to lungs
White blood cells
Fight infection, prevent growth of cancer. Larger than RBC. 1 drop= 5000-11000 WBC.
Platelets
Clotting blood. When cut, stop bleeding and seal wound by thickening the blood to a scab. 1 drop= 200000-400000 platelets.
Arteries
Carry blood away from heart (oxygenated blood)
Blood vessels.
Blood underpressure- thick walled and elastic- withstand pressurized flow
Veins
Take blood to heart (deoxygenated blood)
Thinner walks- blood is not pressurized like arteries.
Blood flow in heart
Body>superior vena cave> right atrium> tricuspid valve> right ventricle> pulmonary semilunar valve> pulmonary artery> lungs> pulmonary veins> left atrium> bicuspid valve> left ventricle > aortic semilunar valve> aorta > body
Pulmonary artery
Carry deoxygenated blood (only arteries, left+right)
