Science Flashcards
Sedimentary rock
Rock that forms when sediment from erosion is compressed together.
Erosion
When small pieces of rock (sediment) are moved around by wind and/or water.
Weathering
When rocks are broken down into smaller pieces.
Deposited/Deposition
When sediment stops moving and collects in a new area.
Relative dating
The age of something based on its placement.
Absolute dating
The exact age of something,
Salinity
The concentration of salt in water or soil.
Magma
Molten rock within Earth.
Igneous rock
Rock formed from magma or lava.
Metamorphic rock
Rock formed from existing rock; heat and pressure cause the minerals to form new combinations or new crystals.
Air Mass
A large body of air with roughly the same temperature and humidity.
Strata
Layers of sedimentary rock that compile and compress over time that can trap fossils within them.
Trace fossil
Impression or sign of activity such as feeding, burrowing, walking, or resting.
Mineral
A solid, naturally formed substance that always has the same composition and the same properties.
Transitional fossil
A fossil that provides evidence for organisms transitioning from living in water to land.
Thermal Energy
A type of kinetic energy that refers to the energy within a system that is responsible for its temperature.
Rock
Rock
A naturally formed combination of minerals and other natural materials.
Climate
The long-term average of weather, typically averaged over a period of 30 years.
Light Intensity
A measure of the intensity of light hitting Earth’s surface.
Body Fossil
Preserved remains of the plant or animal itself, or the preserved parts of the animal or plant like bones, teeth, and shells, or the imprint of parts of the animal or plant.
Humidity
A measure of how much water vapor is in the air.
Weather Front
The boundary between two air masses.
Cold Front
A type of weather front where cold air masses overtake warm air masses.
