Sciatic N Flashcards
Anatomy
MOTOR & SENSORY
L4 - S2 nerve roots, exits at greater sciatic notch
Runs anterior, above/thru piriformis in distal thigh separates to tibial & common peroneal nerves
curves around ischial spines and descends lateral to common hamstring tendons, posterior to short ER of hip
Innervates HS, portion of adductor magnus, all muscles of leg/foot
Peroneal division most injured b/c fibers are more superficial
Origins of mechanical irritation
Iatrogenic (THA), posterior dislocation of femur, fall in sitting, compensatory lordosis, back instability, direct pressure, pirfiformis hypertrophy/spasm/contracture/inflammation/
Gait dysfunction
Examinations
Spinal examination History Movement analysis SLR/neurodynamic tests LLTT of tibial tract -> DF, EV Hip ROM PFT MLT
Treatment
related to impairment, cause, pressure relief
neurodynamic stretching
