Anatomy

A

MOTOR & SENSORY
L4 - S2 nerve roots, exits at greater sciatic notch
Runs anterior, above/thru piriformis in distal thigh separates to tibial & common peroneal nerves
curves around ischial spines and descends lateral to common hamstring tendons, posterior to short ER of hip
Innervates HS, portion of adductor magnus, all muscles of leg/foot
Peroneal division most injured b/c fibers are more superficial

Origins of mechanical irritation

A

Iatrogenic (THA), posterior dislocation of femur, fall in sitting, compensatory lordosis, back instability, direct pressure, pirfiformis hypertrophy/spasm/contracture/inflammation/
