A) Schools as an Important Institution for promoting PA
- reach large number of individuals
- norms can be developed
- need more PE in schools
B) PA/sport/PE -youth and adolescents
- not many kids meeting PA guidelines
- most sport participation in high income families
- —smaller gender gap with higher income households
-when PE is no longer mandatory, participation decreases as grade increases
Recommended Action:
- make changes to PA routine
- target most in need (aborig, girls, disabled, low income)
- expand social marketing (communicate benefits)
C) QDPE
Quality Daily Physical Education
- At least 30 min/day throughout entire school year
- Well planned: variety of activities, appropriate for all ages & stages,
- taught by qualified and enthusiastic teachers
- High Participation: all students, emphasize fun & enjoyment, success, fair play, and personal health.
- enhance cardio and endurance system
- creative and safe
Ensures that all children develop the knowledge, skills and habits to do PA for life
Outcomes of QDPE
- skill and fitness development
- more motivation to be active
- better academic performance
- pos. impact on obesity
- more active up to 20 yrs later
D) Status of school PE in Canada
Problems:
- less students take PE when optional
- semesters: results in lower volume of PE
Recommended actions:
- schools & teachers should comply w/ PE policies
- employ PA specialists for all grades
- promote mastery during PE classes
Problems with Untrained (generalists) teachers?
- limited ability to provie developmentally appropriaite classes
- –students become discouraged and dropped out
- –hold neg. attitudes toward PE (prefer to teach academics)

- students w/ higher competence veiw themselves to be more accepted by peers and teachers
- teachers give more attention to more skilled students (leads to learned helplessness & dropout)
