1) social support
- promotes psychological well being
- married women need highly supportive husbands to be active (spousal approval)
* beneficail effects of marriage only apply to women (men maintain PA)
2) Social control
- married ppl less likely to engage in health destructive behaviours (have a commitment to spouse).
Having Children
More barriers, less time
- lack of time due to family obligations
- lack of support from partners & family/friends
- costs
Divorce
Men: higher tobacco use, alcohol consumption, weight loss
Women: Reduced sleep, increases weight loss.
-Less active…more studies needed.
Single Parent Families
Need more research***
- some day less active, more sedentary
- others say more tv time, but more active
Same Sex families
- provide better environment for active lifestyles
- identify importance of leisure time, both together and and alone.
Older population
- most are inactive
- Socially isolated, leads to:
1) anxiety and arousal stress (creates high BP)
2) reduce social support and social control for heathy behaviours (lower QUALITY of support)
3) Social ties linking ppl w/ social networks & access to health resources are reduced (lower QUANTITY of support)
Family Caregivers
- more limitations for PA
- may respond to stress by engaging in neg. health behaviours (including reduced PA)
