Why is PE important?
It is thought to be one of the major factors that influences the activity levels of a young person as it can shape their attitudes and behaviour in the future.

What are the benefits from PE?
It improves health and fitness levels, it provides a balance within the subjects taught, it prepares young people to take part in physical activity when they leave school, it provides approved qualifications in line with other subjects such as a GCSE and it reflects the importance and value of sport and physical activity in society.
How do schools include PE?
They have timetables PE lessons, extra-curricular activities, clubs and team practice sessions, sports performance awards and links with local clubs.
What is extra-curricular?
An activity that takes place out of timetables lessons such as lunchtimes or after school.

Linking with other subjects taught in school.

Help young people to be able to make informed health and life choices in order to reach their potential, and through this create happy, healthier children who do better in learning and in life.

Who is involved in the programme?
Children and young people, parents, school staff and the whole school community.
What are the four themes that the programme focuses on?
Personal, social and health education; healthy eating; physical activity and emotional health and well being.
What is the personal, social and health education aspect of the programme?
Incorporates sex and relationship education and drug education, it contributes to the five national curriculum outcomes for children and it provides children with knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their lives.

Being healthy, staying safe, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and economic well being.
What is a whole-school approach?
Something that is an essential part of everything school does.
What is economic wellbeing?
Having sufficient income for basic necessities.
What is the healthy eating aspect of the programme?
Gives children the knowledge to make heathy food choices, healthy foods are available across the school day and it works together with the School Food Trust.
What is the physical activity aspect of the programme?
Children are provided with a range of activities to be physically active and they understand how physical activity can make them healthy and improve and be a part of their everyday life.
