It is quick and easy to organise, and it can allow high numbers as half drop out after each round.
What is a knockout competition?
One team plays against another and the winner goes onto the next round and the loser drops out of the competition. Most are played in rounds and can even have some seeded teams or players.
What are the disadvantages of knockouts?
If you lose you only get to play one game and you may need to have qualifying events or byes to get to the right mathematical number in order to lose half the entry dying each round.
What does seeded mean?
The best players or teams are selected and kept apart in the early rounds.
What does byes mean?
A free passage into the next round of the knockout.
What are leagues?

What are the advantages of a league?

What are the disadvantages of a league?
It goes on for a very long time, if you are in a lower league it can take years to move up to a higher league and you can end up with fixture congestion towards the end of the season.
What are ladders?
There is a set number of players or teams on a list (ladder) and you can challenge people above you to games and then take up their place on the higher ladder if you win.
What are the advantages of ladders?
It is well suited to sports such as squash, badminton or tennis and it is very simple to run or administer.
What are the disadvantages of ladders?
Progress can be very slow and only really suitable for a fairly small entry.
What are combination events?
These combine elements of the other type of competitions.
What are the advantages of a combination events?
As many games as you like can be played, teams may get more than one chance to qualify and it allows for a high number of teams to be involved.
What are the disadvantages of combination events?
It can take a long time to complete and there may be some meaningless games where teams have already qualified for the next stage.
What is a round robin event?
Where everyone plays each other in a mini league and then there is a final at the end.
