What is schizophrenia?
Severe mental disorder that affects the way you think, emotions, language, sense of self and behavior
What neurotransmitter causes schizophrenia and what does it do?
Dopamine- abnormal activity of it at D2 receptor in brain causes schizophrenia
List the positive symptoms?
Hallucinations
Delusions
Thought disorder
Movement disorder
List the negative symptoms?
Lack of motivation
Social withdrawal
Neglect of personal hygiene
Anhedonia and apathy
What are the treatments used?
First gen antipsychotics(Typicals) - more positive symptoms
Second gen (Atypical) - both positive and negative
First gen are more likely to cause what?
Extrapyramidal side effects (parkinsonism, dystonia, akathisia, tardive dyskinesia)
Second gen can cause?
Metabolic side effects (weight gain, diabetes, dyslipidemia)

What is the monitoring requirement for weight?
Monitor first 6 weeks then 12 weeks then annually

12 weeks then annually
What is the monitoring requirement for prolactin
Start of therapy
Then 6 months

What do you give for people that haven’t responded to antipsychotics?
Clozapine
What is the leucocyte and blood count monitoring requirement for clozapine
Monitor every week for the first 18 weeks then every two weeks for a year then monthly
What’s the fasting blood glucose monitoring requirement for clozapine?
Measure before therapy then after one then every 4-6 months after
