what is schizophrenia?
psychotic disorder ( psychosis means loss of contact with reality). making it difficult for a person to function because their ability to perceieve,process and respond is impaired. marked by periods of remission w/o symptoms and relapse w symptoms
what is positive symptoms
strange and bizarre additions to normal behaviour
what is negative symptoms
loss or absence of normal characteristics
what are cognitive symtopms?
issues to do with info processing
+ve symptoms: delusions
false/bizarre beliefs persist even in presence of disconfirming evidence
- delusions of reference others behaviour directed at them
- delusions of grandeur false impression of ones importance
-delusions of persecution plotted against
thought insertion- thoughts have been implanted by another
thought broadcasting- others can hear thoughts
how are cultural differences relevant to delusions
reflect predominant themes and values of a persons culture eg delusions of sainthood, Americans being spied on
or see it has spiritual exaltation in india= spirit median, in african cultures believe they can communicate with ancestors leading to different diagnosis
+ve symptoms: hallucinations
perception of stimuli that isnt present visual, auditory or olfactory
most commonly hearing voices/ running commentary
+ve symptoms: disordered thinking/speech
underlying issues with conscious thoughts that can affect lang eg may lead to neologisms or word salad where theres loose associations in thoughts where one idea triggers another
+ve symptoms: abnormal motor behaviour/grossly disorganised
inc catatonia- agitated movements over and over again, or c means not moving
-ve symptoms examples
lack of energy, social withdrawal, flatness of emotions, not looking after self, lack of pleasure and speaking little
eval of +ve symptoms
may be hard to measure as not directly observable
cross-cultural diagnosis is hard as cultural diff are present
eval of -ve symptoms
objective measure are directly observable as its based on behaviours
less affected by cultural differences
cognitive symptoms
difficulties concentrating and paying attention
problems with working memory
difficulties with executive functioning and decision making
