What is Schizophrenia?
A chronic mental disorder characterised by delusions, hallucinations, and distortions in thinking, perception and emotions
How does the ICD-10 diagnose Sz?
It states only negative symptoms are required (avolition and speech poverty)
How does the DSM-5 diagnose Sz?
It states positive symptoms are required (delusions and hallucinations)
What are hallucinations?
Unusual sensory experiences in relation to any sense
What are delusions?
“paranoia” - irrational beliefs
What is avolition?
“apathy” - finding it difficult to keep up with goal directed activity
What are the three signs Andreason found for avolition?
- poor hygeine
- lack of persistence in work or education
- lakc of energy
What is speech poverty?
Changes in patterns of speech accompanied by a delay in verbal responses and speech disorganisation
