what is schizophrenia?
a severe mental disorder where contact with reality and insight are impaired, an example of psychosis.
what are positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
delusions
hallucinations
atypical experiences, in addition to normal experiences
what is a hallucination?
they are sensory experiences that have either no basis in reality or distorted perception of things that are there.
what are delusions?
they are beliefs that have no basis in reality. for example a person believes that they are someone else or that they are a victim of conspiracy.
what is a negative symptom of schizophrenia?
atypical experiences that represent the loss of a usual experience such as a loss of thinking or a loss of motivation.
what is speech poverty?
it involves reduced frequency and quality of speech
what is avolition ?
it involves a loss of motivation to carry out tasks and results in lowered activity levels
what is comorbidity?
the occurrence of two disorders or conditions together. eg schizophrenia and a personality disorder. where two conditions are frequently diagnosed together, calls to question of validity of diagnosing disorders on their own.
what is symptom overlap?
occurs when two or more conditions share symptoms. where the disorders share many symptoms this calls into questions the validity of classifying the two disorders separately.

lack of energy
