what is schizophrenia?
severe and enduring form of psychosis. Loss of contact with reality

- flattened effect (flat mood)

- often present before onset of psychotic symptoms
- may have developmental role
- include poor insight, impaired attentional processes, memory deficits
hallucinations
false sensory experiences e.g., visual, somatic, auditory, olfactory
auditory hallunications
when sufferers are experiencing auditory hallucinations there is neural activity in brain regions involved in speech generation and perception of sounds
Delusions
usually involve a misinterpretation of perceptions or experiences and become fixed beliefs that are not amendable to change in light of contradictory evidence
effects of psychosis
- social withdrawal
- preoccupation with personal world
- often difficult to maintain/obtain a job
- high incidence of homelessness
