Anxiety
negative mood state characterised by bodily symptoms of physical tension and by apprehension about the future
Fear
an immediate alarm reaction to danger - can be protective, e.g., fight or flight
Panic attack
an abrupt surge of intense fear or intense discomfort that reaches a peak within minutes and during which time four or more of the following symptoms occur
5 criterions for panic attack by DSM
- palpitations
- sensations of shortness of breath
- sweating
- trembling or shaking
- feeling of choking
- chest pain
- nausea
- dizzy
panic disorder
recurrent experiences of sudden, inexplicable and overwhelming apperhension
expected
uncued - appears spontaneously
cued - possible to identify the trigger event
cognitive model of panic
- trigger (internal or external)
- threat perceived (e.g., i can’t breathe, i am going to suffocate)
- anxiety (body symptoms of mental symptoms)
social anxiety disorder
fear of situations in which one is exposed to the scrutiny of others and the fear that one may do something that will cause humiliation or embarrassment
Agoraphobia
an extension of panic and involves the fear of experiencing panic in public places
treatment
drug treatments often no more effective than placebo, cognitive behavioural therapy aims to change the misperceptions or irrational beliefs
