A type of psychosis characterised by a profound disruption of cognition and emotion.

What is the DSM-V?
A classification and description of over 200 mental disorders, grouped in terms of their common features.
What is the ICD-10?
Used in Europe, has every disorder and disease known with descriptions of each to help diagnose the illness.
Define Positive Symptoms.
Appear to reflect an excess or distortion of normal functioning.
What are examples of Positive Symptoms?
Hallucinations
Delusions
Disorganised Speech
Define Hallucinations.
Distortions or exaggerations of perception in any of the senses, most notably auditory.
Define Delusions.
Firmly held irrational beliefs that are caused by distortions of reasoning or misinterpretations of experiences.
Define Negative Symptoms.
Appear to reflect a diminution or loss of normal functioning.
What are examples of Negative Symptoms?
Speech Poverty
Avolition
Anhedonia
Define Speech Poverty.
Characterised by the lessening Of Speech fluency and productivity, perhaps reflecting slowing or blocked thoughts.
Define Avolition.
A reduction of interests and desires as well as an inability to initiate and persist in goal-directed behaviour.
Define Anhedonia.
A loss of interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities, or a lack of reactivity to normally pleasurable stimuli.
Define Co-Morbidity.
Refers to the extent that two conditions or diseases occur simultaneously in a patient.
Define Symptom Overlap.
Symptoms of a disorder may not be unique to that disorder but may also be found in other disorders, making accurate diagnosis difficult.
