Humanistic Approach Flashcards
What are the Basic Assumptions of the Humanistic Approach?
- people have full control over their own destiny (free will)
What is Maslow’s (1943) Hierarchy Of Needs?
Emphasises the importance of personal growth and fulfilment through 5 levels of needs.
What is the order of the needs in Maslow’s Hierarchy?
Physiological/safety/love and belonging/esteem/self-actualisation.
What did Rogers (1951) claim that people have?
- positive regard from others
- feelings of self worth
Explain what Congruence is?
A similarity between someone’s ideal self and their perception of their current self.
What did Rogers (1959) suggest about Conditions of Worth?
Conditions an individual believes signified isn’t others have put on them and which they believe must be in place for them to be accepted and loved by others and see themselves positively.
Define Unconditional Positive Regard.
When someone is accepted for who they are, no matter what they do.
How has Conditions of Worth changed some therapists?
Therapists provide empathy and unconditional positive regard to help dissolve the client’s conditions of worth.
What is an Advantage Of Maslow’s Hierarchy?
Hagerstown (1999) found that countries where the population was generally higher up the hierarchy had much better economic growth.
Any research support for Conditions of Worth?
Harter et al (1996) discovered that teenagers who feel they have to fulfil certain conditions in order to gain their parents’ approval frequently ended up not liking themselves.
General Limitations?
Most of the research fail to establish a causal relationship between variables: Rogers was an advocate of non-experimental methods.
Why is the Humanistic Approach Limited?
It’s very unrealistic: people are not as inherently good as theorists suggest.
