positive symptoms
general excesses in behaviours, thoughts & feelings experienced in addition to “ordinary” existence
include hallucinations, delusions and disorganised speech.

experience a seemingly real perception of something that is not actually present
e.g. see people who are not there
delusions
strongly held false beliefs which persist despite disconfirming evidence.
e.g.being an extremely important figure like the next Jesus
negative symptoms
general deficits in behaviours, thoughts & feelings experienced (loss of usual abilities and experiences.)
include avolition, speech poverty and emotional disturbance.
avolition
severe loss of motivation to carry out everyday tasks e.g work, hygiene, hobbies
results in lowered activity levels and unwillingness to carry out goal directed behaviours.
Speech poverty
A reduction in the amount and quality of speech. May include a delay in verbal responses during conversation. DSM emphasises speech disorganisation and incoherence as a positive symptom
disorganised speech (positive symptoms)
vague, loosely associated or incoherent speech severe enough to substantially impair effective communication
