what is schizophrenia?
it is a mental illness where someone loses touch with reality and affects the way they speak, think or feel
features of schizophrenia
- for woman start in mid 20 and men in early 30
- Jablensky found that in 1000 ppl 1.4% are schizophrenic and quarter not likely to get it again. Positive symptoms can be overcome but negative remains.
- Goldstein found that women under the age of 45 have less severe schizophrenia.
- people with schizophrenia are likely to be the victims than the attacker.
- schizophrenia is common in lower socio economic group and urban areas than rural areas
- 1% affected with schizophrenia and likely to happen to men and woman.
types of schizophrenia
PARANOID
- someone being suspicious of others and having delusions of grandeur and hallucinations.
DISORGANISED
- speech id disorganized an hard to follow, inappropriate mood but no hallucinations.
CATATONIC
- withdrawn and isolated and has little movement
UNDIFFERENTIATED
- doesn’t fit other types of schizophrenia.
prodromal period
symptoms that start before a diagnosis is given
similarities in dsm-iv-tr and icd-10 for schizophrenia
symptoms must be present be present for 1 month and catatonic behavior must be present
positive symptoms of schizophrenia
hallucinations- hearing or seeing things that are not present and can be seen as a positive thing in some cultures.
delusions- thinking that movements are controlled by someone else, like someone trying to kill them.
thought disorders- disorganized thoughts and can’t concentrate.
negative symptoms of schizophrenia
avolition- lack of energy to carry out everyday tasks
anhedonia- inability to feel pleasure from activities that were previously enjoyable.
lack of sense of self- not looking after appearance
alogia- using few words as possible
