- OCD can happen to young children to adults despite their gender or social backgrounds.
-12 in a 1000 people have OCD
-WHO put OCD in top 10 of the most disabling illness in terms of lack of income and diminished quality of life. - 1:1 ratio men and women but men have it earlier than women
- 741,500 people in the UK have OCD
- a third of all adults with OCD developed it in their childhood or adolescence.

obsessions
A
obsessions are unwelcomed thoughts, urges that appear repeatedly in someone’s thought. They are usually so horrible they can’t can’t tell anyone and interrupt other thoughts making them feel anxious

compulsions
A
they are repeated activities that someone with OCD feel they have to do. this can be repeatedly checking that the door is locked. Compulsions are present to deal with distress from the obsessive thoughts and relieve anxiety. Repeating compulsion is distressing so relief is short lived.

- essential feature is of obsessional thought where ideas enter mind in stereotypical form.
- obsessional thought and compulsions present for 1 month
- at least 1 thought resisted unsuccessfully

- obsessions- person tries to avoid thoughts with other actions
- compulsions- behavior done to prevent distress i an unrealistic way
- At a point in disorder where the person thinks that obsessions are excessive
- obsessions and compulsions are time consuming and interfere with routine.
