How to preserve a fire scene?
- Ensure scene is not interfered with
- Exclusion and control of onlookers
- Preserving evidence
- Prevent looting
External examination looks for - 3 things (The adjoining premises, surrounding area and damaged structure)
Adjoining premises
- Accelerant containers
- Attempted forced entry
- Broken windows
- Alleyways
- Buildings fire affected
Surrounding area
- Accelerant containers
- Contents of outbuilding missing
- Run down property
- Business appears to be struggling
Damaged structure
- Jemmy marks
- Broken glass
- Burn patterns
What is the involved in a Preliminary Internal Examination?
- Signs of hardship
- Lack of clothing in wardrobe, drawers
- Riffled premises
- Owner/occupier attitude
- Unusual odors
What will a SFI look for when trying to find origin of a fire?
- Burn patterns
- Damage to walls, roof timbers
- Damage to windowsills, door edges
- Damage to floor
How to be determining the seat of a fire?
- Witness reports - when and where they first noticed fire
- Wind direction and speed
- Color of flames and smoke
- Severity of damage
- Reports and opinions of other specialists
