Word scale
A
A word scale tells us how much real distance on the ground one centimetre on the map represents.
1cm represents 30km. (The word scale tells us that 1cm on the map represents 30km on the ground).

A
A ratio scale for the word scale 1cm represents 30km: 1:3 000 000 cm.
This means 1cm on the map represents 3 000 000 cm in reality.
A metric scale is needed to work out a ratio scale. • Metric scale: 100 cm = 1 m 1 000 m = 1 km 100 000 cm = 1 km
