The world uses the Greenwich meridian for the world standard time. The time at Greenwich is called Greenwich Mean Time or GMT.

The earth rotates from west to east, so places east of the Greenwich meridian in the eastern hemisphere are ahead of GMT & places west of the Greenwich meridian in the western hemisphere are behind GMT.
