Q

What is plasma?

A

Contains proteins and minerals.
It is mostly water.
It has dissolved salts.
It is 55% of your blood.

10
Q

What are arteries and what do they do?

A

They are thick-walked blood vessels that move oxygen-rich blood to all the cells.
They carry blood away from the heart.

Q

What are capillaries and what do they do?

A

They are very thin blood vessels that link arteries and veins.
Oxygen and carbon dioxide can diffuse in and out of cells through the capillaries.

Q

What are veins and what do they do?

A

They are thinner-walked blood vessels that bring blood back to the heart and lungs so that it can be enriched with oxygen.

They are “dirty blood” (contains carbon dioxide and other waste) or deoxygenated blood.

Valves prevent back flow of blood as it travels back to the heart.

Q

How does the blood travel through the heart?

A
  1. Blood that is low in oxygen flows from veins into the right atrium.
  2. The right atrium sends this blood to the right ventricle.
  3. The right ventricle sends the blood to the two lungs so that it can be enriched with oxygen.
  4. The oxygen-rich blood moves back from the lungs to the heart and enters the left atrium.
  5. The left atrium sends the blood to the left ventricle.
  6. The left ventricle sends oxygen-rich blood to the whole body through the arteries.

15
Q

Where does gas exchange in the alveoli occur?

A

Where the alveoli, capillaries and blood vessels meet

16
Q

What happens in the gas exchange on alveoli?

A

Carbon dioxide leaves the alveoli and oxygen enters

17
Q

What are the two upper chambers of the heart?

A

Right atrium and left atrium

18
Q

Where does the left ventricle send oxygen-rich blood?

A

To the whole body through the arteries

19
Q

What are alveoli?

A

Thin-walled sacs of air
