SC8 #4 Circulatory and Respiratory system Flashcards
What parts of the body does the circulatory system use?
Includes the heart, blood and blood vessels
What does the circulatory system do?
Moves blood throughout the body and transports nutrients, dissolved gases and waste
How much blood is in the human body?
4-5 litres
What does blood do?
Transports oxygen, nutrients and water to cells.
Transports carbon dioxide and waste away from cells.
What are the components of blood?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
What is plasma?
Contains proteins and minerals.
It is mostly water.
It has dissolved salts.
It is 55% of your blood.
What are red blood cells and what do they do?
They make your blood look red and they carry oxygen and carbon dioxide
What are white blood cells and what do they do?
The bone marrow is where they are produced. WBC fight infections
What do platelets do?
Clots blood
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
Arteries, capillaries and veins
What are arteries and what do they do?
They are thick-walked blood vessels that move oxygen-rich blood to all the cells.
They carry blood away from the heart.
What are capillaries and what do they do?
They are very thin blood vessels that link arteries and veins.
Oxygen and carbon dioxide can diffuse in and out of cells through the capillaries.
What are veins and what do they do?
They are thinner-walked blood vessels that bring blood back to the heart and lungs so that it can be enriched with oxygen.
They are “dirty blood” (contains carbon dioxide and other waste) or deoxygenated blood.
Valves prevent back flow of blood as it travels back to the heart.
How does the blood travel through the heart?
- Blood that is low in oxygen flows from veins into the right atrium.
- The right atrium sends this blood to the right ventricle.
- The right ventricle sends the blood to the two lungs so that it can be enriched with oxygen.
- The oxygen-rich blood moves back from the lungs to the heart and enters the left atrium.
- The left atrium sends the blood to the left ventricle.
- The left ventricle sends oxygen-rich blood to the whole body through the arteries.
What are the parts of the heart?
Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, aorta, capillaries and inferior & superior vena cava
