Q

which metals are extracted by reduction using carbon

A

zinc iron, tin, copper and silver because carbon can only take the oxygen away from metals which are less reactive than carbon itself

Q

what is bioleaching

A

using bacteria to separate the metals from the ores, the bacteria get energy from the bonds between the atoms in the ore, separating out the metal from the ore in the process, the solution produced can have metal ions extracted by electrolysis or displacement

Q

what is phytoextraction

A

growing plants in soil that contain metal compounds, the metal then builds up in the leaves which can then be burned to ash that can have the metal ions extracted by electrolysis or displacement

Q

what are the four stages of the life cycle assesment

A

choice of mineral- different minerals cause different amounts of pollution to be mined and extracted
manufacture- causes lots of pollution from waste material
product use- can damage the environment e.g paint gives off toxic fumes
disposal- landfill
