What affect did the RSPCA have on sport in the nineteenth century?
It stopped certain sports from happening, for example bear baiting and dog fighting due to cruelty to animals.
Rugby is a public school. Explain who went to public schools.
The rich middle classes went to public school.
Why was sport first introduced in public schools?
To gain control of the students.
How did the house system affect the development of sport?
The house system allowed for organised competitions and rules to be introduced to schools. The free time outside of lessons at the boarding school meant proper training and tactics could be introduced to the game and involve everyone.
How have public schools developed sport as we know it today?
Many students who went through nineteenth century schools went on to universities to spread the rules of the game. They then left and started up the governing bodies of the sport, codifying the games they played.
What is the difference between a working class professional and a gentleman amateur?
A working class professional is a working class person who excelled in the sport and was paid to play by the higher classes; they were looked down on by the middle and upper classes. An amateur professional was from the middle or upper class and had the funds to spend time playing games and funded themselves.
What is the DCMS and what do they do?
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport distribute funds to key organisations, including UK Sport and Sport England.
Explain where the ‘frontier spirit’ and ‘american dream’ came from.
Christopher Columbus landed in America and pushed into the country, taking over land as he went - making the Red Indians retreat. This force (frontier spirit) and the promise of a better land (known as the american dream) are the ethics of the country which are still believed today.
Define Capitalism
A system based on private or corporate ownership and the investment of money for profit.
Name one positive effect commercialism has on athletes in America.
Funding for a better chance of success and promotes events that otherwise might not happen.
How is American football closely linked to commercialism.
sponsors, funding, stop-start play, half time show, less teams so more money in specific teams, american dream of power and endeavour, Super Bowl.
Explain the nature of sport in Australia.
national preoccupation, integral part to daily life, involved and spectators, lots of media attention, legacy of 2000 Olympics, bush culture, good climate and terrain, political support, tradition, lots of the economy based on sport.
