(SBI4U1) Calvin-Benson Cycle Flashcards
Step 1
3 Carbon dioxide goes into the cycle, reacting with
3 RuBP, catalyzed by rubisco, and producing 3 6C-2P
Step 2
The 3 6C-2P quickly becomes 6 3C-1P also known as PGA
Step 3
6 ATP comes in and adds 6 P to the cycle, creating 6 3C-2P
Step 4
6 NADPH comes in and adds 6 electrons and kicking off 6 P, creating 6 3C-1P also known as G3P
Step 5
1 3C-1P falls off, forming half of a glucose
Step 6
2 P fall off the remaining 5 3C-1P as they re-organize to 3 5C-1P
Step 7
3 ADP comes in and adds 3 P to the cycle, creating 3 5C-2P also known as RuBP
What is PGA?
Phosphoglycerate, a carboxylic acid
What is G3P?
Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate, an aldehyde
What is the difference between PGA and G3P?
PGA is a carboxylic acid whilst G3P is an aldehyde
What is RuBP?
Ribulose-bi-phosphate
What is Rubisco?
An enzyme that catalyzes the reaction between carbon dioxide and RuBP
