SB5 Growth And Development Flashcards
1
Q
SB5f - what Is the lytic cycle?
A
- Virus attaches to cell and injects virus genetic material
- Viral genetic material forms a circle
- New viral genetics/components. Material inserts itself into the cell chromosome and creates full virus structure
- Cell then ruptures (lyses) due to high concentration - releases viruses which are free to infect a new host

Q
SB5f - what is the lysogenic cycle?
A
- Viral genetic material forms a circle (step 1 same)
- Viral genetic material inserts itself into chromosome.
- Cell/bacterium reproduces normally, at the same time reproducing Viral genetic material at each cell division or cycle of mitosis.
- Cells and Viral genetic material reproduce many times
- Occasionally Viral genetic material separates from chromosome / bacterial chromosome. This begins a lytic cycle
