Q

SB5f - what Is the lytic cycle?

A
  1. Virus attaches to cell and injects virus genetic material
  2. Viral genetic material forms a circle
  3. New viral genetics/components. Material inserts itself into the cell chromosome and creates full virus structure
  4. Cell then ruptures (lyses) due to high concentration - releases viruses which are free to infect a new host

Q

SB5f - what is the lysogenic cycle?

A
  1. Viral genetic material forms a circle (step 1 same)
  2. Viral genetic material inserts itself into chromosome.
  3. Cell/bacterium reproduces normally, at the same time reproducing Viral genetic material at each cell division or cycle of mitosis.
  4. Cells and Viral genetic material reproduce many times
  5. Occasionally Viral genetic material separates from chromosome / bacterial chromosome. This begins a lytic cycle
