Q

Why is cordial an example of diffusion and not osmosis ?

A

When you add blackcurrant squash to water, the particles in squash spread out, so that the strength of its flavour is the same throughout the whole drink.

The squash molecules move from the high concentration of squash molecules to the low concentration.

This is diffusion, not osmosis.

For it to be osmosis the squash would have to be trapped in a membrane and the water move instead.

Q

What is a hypotonic solution ?

A

A hypotonic solution isa solution that has lower osmotic pressure than another solution to which it is compared. It may also mean a solution that contains a lower amount of solute as compared with the solute concentration in the other solution
