Paper 1 - The Immune System Flashcards
What is an antigen ?
Each pathogen has a unique antigen on its surface
What is an antibody ?
A lymphocyte has a specific antibody that fits the antigen on the pathogen (like an enzyme) - activates lymphocyte. The antibodies produced by the white blood cell are specific (like the active site) meaning they can only destroy that pathogen.
What is the secondary response ?
Secondary response is the memory lymphocytes acting that remain in the blood
Why does it take time for antigens to be made after the body is infected (few days) ?
Takes time for lymphocytes to identify the antigens on the pathogen and to take action - antibodies. Secondary response quicker due to memory lymphocytes.
Two responses triggered by antigens ??
Trigger an immune response and the production of memory lymphocytes
