Paper 1 - Classification Of Organisms Flashcards
What are organisms in the animal kingdom like
- Multicellular (many cells arranged in tissues and organs)
- cells have nuclei
- no cell walls
- heterotroph (eat other organisms)
What are organisms in the plant kingdom like
- multicellular
- cells have nuclei and chloroplasts
- cellulose cell walls
- autotroph (energy from photosynthesis)
What are organisms like in the fungi kingdom
- multicellular (apart from yeasts)
- cells have nuclei
- chitin cell walls
- feed of dead matter
What are organisms in the protist kingdom like ?
- mostly unicellular
- cells have nuclei
- some have cell walls (not chitin)
What are organisms like in the prokaryote kingdom (including bacteria)
- unicellular
- no nucleus
- flexible cell wall
Why was the 3 domain system produced ?
It was discovered after genetic analysis that organisms in the same kingdoms were very similar, so the 3 domain system was produced.
Why did archea lead to development of the 3 domain system ?
Archea discovered and put into prokaryote kingdom because unicellular with no nucleus > after genetic analysis found to be very different to prokaryotes
What are the 3 domains?
Archea (no nucleus, genes contain unused sections of DNA)
Bacteria (cells with no nucleus, genes contain no unused sections of DNA)
eukarya (nucleus, unused sections of DNA)
Multicellular meaning
Cells are arranged in tissues and organs
