save my exams - organic chemistry Flashcards
Homologous series
A homologous series is a group of organic compounds that have the same functional group, general formula, chemical properties but different number of carbons atoms
methane and state at room temp
ch4 - gas
ethane and state at room temp
c2h6-gas
propane and state at room temp
c3h8-gas
butane and state at room temp
c4h10-gas
pentane and state at room temp
c5h12-liquid
As a homologous series is ascended
size of the molecule increases
an effect on the physical properties, such as boiling point and density
Hydrocarbons
compounds that are made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms ONLY
general formula
formula that represents a homologous series of compounds using letters and numbers
Eg. the general formula of alkanes is CnH2n+2
Systematic nomenclature
can be used to name organic compounds and therefore make it easier to refer to them
alkane with one carbon atom
ch4 methane
alkane with two carbon atoms
c2h6 ethane
alkane with three carbon atom
c3h8 propane
alkane with 4 carbon atom
c4h10 butane
alkane with 5 carbon atoms
c5h12 pentane
