Q

Do what you like to do

A
  • achieve your goals (alcançar)
  • you won’t put in the time (você não dedicará seu tempo)
  • you’re relying entirely on your imagination to convert all these words into meaning (confiando inteiramente)
  • that is a more intense learning environment than say watching videos (Para mim, esse é um ambiente de aprendizado mais intenso do que, por exemplo, assistir a vídeos)
  • but there are other people who like to watch videos and who will watch videos over and over again (mas há outras pessoas que gostam de assistir a vídeos e que os assistem repetidamente)
  • Similarly (Da mesma forma), someone who doesn’t like listening or reading, to my mind, they’re missing out on something (está perdendo alguma coisa)
  • I’ll continue a little bit on the listening and reading and my strategy there (Continuarei a falar um pouco sobre a audição e a leitura e minha estratégia)
  • When I start out with a language I will listen quite often to short bits of content until I understand 50, 60, 70%, then I’ll move on to the next item (Quando começo a usar um idioma, ouço com frequência pequenos trechos de conteúdo até entender 50, 60, 70%, e então passo para o próximo item)
  • I always want to read whatever I listen to and I want to listen to whatever I read (Sempre quero ler o que ouço e quero ouvir o que leio)
  • Certainly in the beginning period that’s what I like doing (Certamente, no período inicial, é isso que eu gosto de fazer)

Do what you like to do 2

A
  • So I very much like to do what I like to do and that keeps me going (portanto,… mantém firme)
  • I know there are some people who like to speak right away (Sei que algumas pessoas gostam de falar logo de cara)
  • redo this sentence (refaça esta frase)
  • I know Luca, who is an excellent polyglot, likes to translate what he has just listened to into his own language. (O que acabou de ouvir)
  • you have to put in the time (você precisa dedicar tempo)
  • Do you like just going and hanging out with people, if that opportunity is available to you? (Sair e conviver com)
  • I don’t like doing a lot of speaking until I have enough of the language (Não gosto de falar muito até ter conhecimento suficiente do idioma)
  • that’s going to be a major condition for success because if you like doing it then all of a sudden it’s the process of language learning that becomes its own reward. (Essa será uma… de repente o processo… sua própria recompensa)

Be patient

A
  • you’ll remember that so far we’ve discussed the need to spend a lot of time (você se lembrará de que, até agora, discutimos a necessidade de passar muito tempo)
  • I see more frustrated language learners who get upset because they forget words (ficam chateados)
  • certain parts of it they just don’t understand (algumas partes simplesmente não são compreendidas)
  • Maybe the day before you felt you were doing very well and all of a sudden you can’t say what you want to say (Talvez no dia anterior você tenha achado que estava indo muito bem e, de repente, não consegue dizer o que gostaria de dizer)

Be patient 2

A
  • it does so on its own schedule (ele faz isso em seu próprio cronograma)
  • you have to be confident as you continue and persevere in your studies and that you’re doing things you like to do (é preciso ter confiança para continuar e perseverar nos estudos e fazer o que gosta)
  • Even if I’m talking to people, of course I’m listening and I’m noticing (Mesmo que eu esteja conversando com as pessoas, é claro que estou ouvindo e observando)
  • All of this is gradually improving my capability in the language (Tudo isso está melhorando gradualmente minha capacidade no idioma)
  • it’s not going to be overnight ( não será da noite para o dia)
  • It may take six months for certain things to sink in, but all of a sudden they do (Pode levar seis meses para que certas coisas sejam assimiladas, mas de repente elas são)
  • Almost without realizing it (and I’ve had this feeling), I’ll go back to a text that I struggled with two-three months, four months earlier (Quase sem perceber (e já tive essa sensação), voltarei a um texto com o qual lutei dois, três ou quatro meses antes)
  • never understand certain parts of it and all of a sudden lo and behold! it’s crystal clear to me (Nunca entendi certas partes e, de repente, eis que tudo fica claro para mim)
  • you have these moments of great triumph (grande triunfo)
  • but there is so much emotion in how the brain learns that it’s very important not to get negative (mas há tanta emoção na forma como o cérebro aprende que é muito importante não se tornar negativo)
  • Fluency need not mean perfection (Fluência não precisa significar perfeição)
  • then I think you can afford to be patient (acho que pode se dar ao luxo de ser paciente)
