Arbois, Gahier, Trousseau ‘Les Grand Vergers’. 2010 $95

A

This vineyard site produces Gahier’s greatest red. The vines are sixty to seventy years of age, the soil is heavily ‘marl’. The vines are on a gentle slope with superb exposure to the sun. The result is a classic Trousseau. The reds are as mineral-driven and occasionally as funky as Puffeney’s are with a freshness and length that are compelling. All of his reds are aged in old large oak.

French vergers = orchards in English

Cote Rotie, Bernard Levet ‘Chavaroche’, 2006, Northern Rhone, France 115

A

Cote Rotie, Bernard Levet ‘Chavaroche’, 2006, Northern Rhone, France 115
100% Syrah from the Serine clone. A smaller berry that yields more concentration. The cuvée that we have imported from the outset (1983 vintage) is from the ‘Chavaroche’ vineyard. This wine is aged for thirty to thirty-six months prior to bottling. It is a ferocious wine, unique in its uninhibited expression of the smells and flavors of the appellation. The result is a wine that is controversial, too wild for many but, for us, one of the most elite wines in our personal pantheon.
Tasting Note: medium bodied with classic Northern Rhone, smoked meat, bacon, black olives and dark beautiful ripe raspberries. Gorgeous and silky.
