CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET, PILLOT,“Morgeot-Les Fairendes”, 2008 $127
Jean-Marc Pillot100% Chardonnay

A

CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET, PILLOT,“Morgeot-Les Fairendes”, 2008 $127
Jean-Marc Pillot100% Chardonnay. Fourth generation winemaker. Old vines. 10-30 % new oak used.
The Morgeot is known for its broad-shouldered wines, often the most rich and unctuous of the crus of Chassagne. In this case, Pillot’s vines are located within the most renowned sector of Morgeot known as “Les Fairendes”. This quarter-hectare parcel planted in 1970 benefits from that most favorable of positions to produce a wine that, while large-scaled, has a finesse and presence that elevates it above its more rustic colleagues. Tasting Note: Full bodied with creamy toasty notes and rich apples & chalk. Round and rich. Beautiful expression of Chassagne Montrachet.

70% Furmint/ 30% Hárslevelú. These two grapes are Hungary’s most important whites (foundation of sweet Tokaji, best known of Hungarian wines, pre-dating Sauternes by centuries). Tokaj= name of town, region & wine from base of Carpathian mtns near Slovakia; Tokaji means “from Tokaj”. Current owner Tony Hwang, also owner of biodynamic Huet estate in Vouvray, bought the estate in 1997, took it organic & now biodynamic (will be certified by 2012), infused it w/ cash & passion & resuscitated an ancient esteemed estate that had lapsed into nothingness under Communism. All grand cru vineyards, 6 sites, on volcanic clay & rock soils. Wine spends only 4 mos. in neutral Hungarian oak to keep it fresh & bright. 2000 cs. made.
