What is meant by to punish the offender? PDPDR
- By breaking the law an offender has hurt society, and so we want to see them suffer in return to bring justice.
- The punishment should be equal to the crime and not influenced.
What is meant by to deter the offender?
This is to deter others from committing the same offense, or the offender from doing the same in the future.
- Specific deterrence
- General deterrence
What is meant by to “protect” society?
This sanction physically removes the offender from society, in order to protect the community by restricting their freedom.
What is meant by to “rehabilitate”the offender
It is in society’s best interests to make sure the offender doesn’t reoffend, and changes their life around for the better.
What is meant by to “denunciation” the actions of the offender?
The sanction sends the message that this behavior is not appropriate and that society disapproves of this behavior.
What is a sanction?
A sanction is a penalty imposed by the courts on a person who is guilty of a criminal offense.
