Sampling Techniques AO1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a population?
A
the whole set of people that are of interest
2
Q
What is a sample?
A
a subset of the population collected that are used to represent it
3
Q
What are the sampling techniques?
A
- random
- systematic
- stratified
- oppotunity
- volunteer
4
Q
How do you conduct random sampling?
A
- list members of population using numbers or names
- use a computerised random generator or lottery method to select member
- do this until you’ve filled your sample size
5
Q
How do you conduct systematic sampling?
A
- give each member of population a number
- divide the population size by the sample size to find the intervals for which the members ar selected
- then select the person you will start with using random sampling
- keep picking nth person until sample size is filled
6
Q
How do you conduct statified sampling?
A
- divide population into groups (strata)
- use random sampling to determine which members of each strata will be included in the population sample
7
Q
How do you determine how many people, from each stata, will be included in the sample?
in stratified sampling
A
- divide the number of items in the stratum by the number of items in the entire population
- then multiply that by the total sample size
8
Q
How do you conduct oppotunity sampling?
A
researcher asks anyone who is readily availlable and willing to take part
9
Q
How do you conduct volunteer sampling?
A
- researcher puts advertisement in newpaper, magazine or noticeboard
- the could also place questionnairs around for people to answer
