Hypothesis, Aims and Variables AO1 Flashcards
what is a hypothesis?
a precise, testable statement of the relation between two variables and will predict the outcome of an experiment
what is a directional hypothesis?
a type of hypothesis where the direction of the outcome of the relationship between variables is predicted
what is a non-directional hypothesis?
a type of hypothesis where the direction of the outcome of the relationship between variables is not predicted
when are directional hypothesis used?
when there is previous research to determine the outcome of the study
what are the features of a hypothesis?
- has relationship between an IV and DV
- doesn’t mention aim
- operationalized
what is a null hypothesis?
a type of hypothesis where no difference in relationship between variables is mentioned
what does it mean to operationalize?
it means to define the variables clearly and in a way that’s measurable
What is an aim?
- is a generalm statement of what the researcher intends to investigate
- highlights purpose of the study
What is an IV?
the variable that is manipulated by the researcher
Whta is a DV?
the variable that is measured by the researcher as a result of manipulating the IV
