Sampling techniques Flashcards
who is opportunity sampling most used by?
psychology Students
give three advantages of opportunity sampling?
- easy
- cheap
- quick
in what type of experiment does opportunity sampling have to be used?
In natural experiments
Name 3 disadvantages of opportunity sampling?
- creates a biased sample
- not representative sample
- people may decline to take part so could turn into a volunteer sample
How are volunteer samples often obtained?
Through adverts
what core study uses volunteer sample?
Milgram
3 advantages of volunteer sampling?
- quick
- easy
- can reach a wide variety of participants

2 disadvantages of random sampling?
- very time consuming
- sometimes impossible to carry out if every ones names are needed for example
define stratified sampling?
classifying the population into categories and choosing a sample which consists of participants from each category in the same proportions of the populations .
1 strength of stratified sampling?
-sample should be very representative of the target population
1 weakness of stratified sampling?
-very time consuming
when is snowball sampling used?
When members of your target population are difficult to contact such as student taking illegal drugs.
