sampling methods Flashcards
opportunity
- easily available people
- agree to take part
pros and cons of opportunity
+ easy and quick
- certain subgroups not be available therefore bias
volunteer
- people who have self selected and volunteered
- approached the researcher
pros and cons of volunteer
+ quick and easy
- biased (only motivated people will volunteer)
Random sampling
All members of target population have equal chance of being selected w.g names in a hat.
Random sampling
All members of target population have equal chance of being selected w.g names in a hat.
Pros and cons of random sampling
+ usually representative as everyone has equal chance .
- time consuming and some participants may refuse .
Systematic sampling
A pre determined system of rule e.g select every 2nd,4th,6th from a list
Pros and cons of systematic
+creates less bias sample .
-still chance of being biased e.g all girls could be selected .
Stratified sampling
Identifies sub groups , participants randomly selected from sub groups to represent their group.
Pros and cons of stratefied
+representative as theirs equal proportions of people from each sub group.
-difficult and time consuming .
