Sampling Flashcards
Defined as measuring a small portion of something and then making a general statement about the whole thing.
Sampling
Summary description of a given variable in a population
Parameter
Summary description of a given variable in a sample.
Statistics
Degree of error of a sample statistics when compared with the population parameter
Sampling error
Degree of confidence that a sample statistics will accurately fall within a certain or specified interval from the population parameter
Confidence level
The range within which the sample statistics should fall
Confidence interval
The sample is a proportion of the population and such sample is selected from the population by means of some systematic way in which every element of the population has a chance of being included in the sample.
Probability sampling
The sample is not a proportion of the population and there is no system in selecting the sample
Non-probability sample
There is no system of selection but only those whom the researcher or interviewer meet by chance are included in the sample.
Accidental sample
Specified numbers of persons of certain types are included in the sample.
Quota sampling
A process of picking out people in the most convenient and fastest way to immediately get their reaction to a certain issue
Convenience sampling
Everyone in the population of the inquiry has an equal chance of being selected to be included in the sample
Pure random sampling
A technique of sampling in which every nth in a list maybe selected to be included in a sample
Systematic sampling
The process of selecting randomly samples from the different strata of the population used in the study
Stratified random sampling
Is determining the target population, these to be involved in the study
Purposive sampling
The respondents are chosen on the basis of their knowledge of the information desired
Purposive sampling
Used when the population is so big
Cluster sampling
The general procedure is to divide the area or population into clusters or blocks and then within the final cluster apply any of the different methods of selecting a sample
Cluster sampling
Also called the open form, open-ended, subjective, unrestricted, essay, and unguided response thpe
Free-answer type
Also called the closed form or restricted type
The guided response type
The replies are recalled
Recall type
The possible responses are given and respondent selects his or her answers
Recognition type
There are only two options and one is selected
Dichotomous
Only one answer is chosen from those given as options
Multiple choice
Two or more options may be chosen
Multiple response
A purposeful fave to face relationship between two persons, one of whom called the interviewer who asks questions to gather information and the other called the interviewee who supplies the information asked for
Interview
The interviewer is not allowed to change the specific wordings of the questions in the interview schedule
Standardized interview
The interviewer has complete freedom to develop each interview in the most appropriate manner for each situation
Nonstandardized interview
The interviewer is required to ask a number of specific major questions, and beyond these, he is free to probe as he chooses.
Semistandardized interview
Also called depth interview
Focused interview
The interviewee is allowed and even encouraged to express his feelings without fear of disapproval
Nondirective interview
