Sampling Flashcards
What is a sample?
It is a group of people who take part in a research investigation
What is target population?
It is a subset of the general population
What is meant by sampling techniques?
The method used to select people from the population
What is representativeness?
Are the results a representative of the target population
What is generalisation?
It is the extent to which findings and conclusions from a particular investigation can be applied to the population
What is bias?
When certain groups may be under or over represented within the sample
What are the 5 types of sampling techniques?
Random Systematic Stratified Opportunity Volunteer
What is random sampling?
It is where all members of the target population have an equal chance of being picked.
What is the strength to random sampling?
Free from researcher bias
What are the 4 weaknesses to random sampling?
Time consuming
Complete list of target population difficult to obtain
Participants may refuse to take part
Unrepresentative
What is systematic sampling?
It is when every nth number of the target population is selected.
What are the 2 positives to systematic sampling?
Avoids researcher bias
fair representative
What is stratified sampling?
Where the composition of the sample reflects the proportions of people in the certain sub groups within the target population or the wider population.
What are the 2 positives to stratified sampling?
Avoids researcher bias
representative sample
What is the weakness to stratified sampling?
Complete representation of the target sample is not possible
