sampling Flashcards
Define sampling
Method used to select participants
What are the five types of sampling
1 Random
2 systematic
3 stratified
4 opportunity
5 volunteer

What is random sampling
- Every person in the target population has an equal chance to be chosen to take part in the study
Evaluate random sampling
+ Unbiased as everyone has an equal chance to be in the study
+ Sample should be representative of the target population
- Relies on the research are having details about everyone in the target population
- Time consuming
What is systematic sampling
Selecting every nth person in the target population
Evaluate systematic sampling
+ Representative of the target population
+ Unbiased
- Chance of generating a sample that is not representative i.e More men than women or more older people than younger people
What is stratified sampling
- Small-scale reproduction of the target population by identifying stratas (subgroups) And their proportion within the Target population
- Participants are then randomly sampled to select the proportional amount of participants for each strata
Evaluate stratified sampling
+ Most representative out of all the sampling methods
+ Avoids research a bias
- Time consuming
What is opportunity sampling
- Asking anyone convenient and available within the target population
Evaluate opportunity sampling
+ Fast
+ less costly
- Researcher bias, Researchers choose and ask directly people to participate
- Not representative
What is volunteer sampling
- Advertising the study and allowing participants to put themselves forward
Evaluate volunteer sampling
+ Easy
+ Researchers can Reach large groups of people to be potential participants
- Volunteers are a certain type of person this could create a volunteer bias
Define target population
- The population that the research is investigating
