• This is a number that tells us how closely the covariables are related
• It represents the strength and direction of the relationship
• A correlation coefficient of above 0.8 is seem to be strong
• -1 is a a perfect negative correlation, 0 would be no correlation and +1 is a perfect positive correlation

+ Correlations can be used to investigate trends in data to justify further investigation (Useful in early stage of research)
+ Can be used when it would be ethically questionable to manipulate variables for example stress research
- No cause-and-effect is established so the research I can’t be sure that one covariable is causing the other
- A correlation observed could be due to an intervening variable
