Correlations Flashcards
What is the correlation
The extent to which there is an association between two variables
What are the three types of correlation
Positive
Negative
Zero
Explain the three types of correlation
Positive, is when one variable increases the other also increases
Zero, as when there is no relationship between the two variables
Negative as one as one variable increases the other one decreases
What is a scattergram
- A graph used to plot measurements of two covariables visibly displaying a correlational relationship
What is correlational coefficient
- This is a number that tells us how closely the covariables are related
- It represents the strength and direction of the relationship
- A correlation coefficient of above 0.8 is seem to be strong
- -1 is a a perfect negative correlation, 0 would be no correlation and +1 is a perfect positive correlation
Evaluate the use of correlational analysis
+ Correlations can be used to investigate trends in data to justify further investigation (Useful in early stage of research)
+ Can be used when it would be ethically questionable to manipulate variables for example stress research
- No cause-and-effect is established so the research I can’t be sure that one covariable is causing the other
- A correlation observed could be due to an intervening variable
-
What is a Curvilinear correlation
A non-linear relationship between two covariables
- For example stress and performance, If stress is too low or too high performance may be worse
