experimental design Flashcards
What is repeated measures
Same participants complete two or more levels of the independent variable
Evaluate the use of repeated measures
+ Requires less participants
+ Reduces individual differences or participant variables
- Order effects may affect findings, For example participants may be bored fatigued or guess the aim of the study by the time they complete the second independent variable
+ However Order effects can be minimised by using counterbalancing
What is independent groups design
Different participants complete two or more levels of the independent variable
Evaluate an independent groups design
+ No order affects
+Time efficient
+ Participants less likely to show demand characteristics
- More participants are needed
- Individual differences or participant variables
What is matched pairs design
Different participants complete different conditions but the participants are assessed and matched with a pair in the other condition based on characteristics
Evaluate the use of a matched pairs design
+ Reduces individual differences whilst also reducing demand characteristics and order affects
- Matching is difficult and time-consuming
