10
Having veichals makes it much faster to herd reindeer
No longer have to live so close to herds
What other equipment do they use ti help herd the reindeer
helicopters - can’t use snowmobiles in heavily forested areas + roads
What is their main income
Cash from slaughtered reindeer, rising fuel prices and other costs make little profit
Why are they concerned with urbanisation
Tromso City is expanding fast
Sami forced to move to make way for new developments - reducing space for reindeer habitats causing a continuous battle for land and rights
Because of urbanisation, what are they forced to use
Boat for reindeer to travel on to new pastures as the land is now blocked, heavily subsidised by the goverment in recognition of the encroachment on the family’s overland route
In the past the reindeer set the pace moving only when ready, but now boat departures have fixed dates causing stress to meet deadline
What happens if they lose more land
They lose the reindeer and their culture, with not enough money made to support living
Why is Sami culture threatened
many young Sami are attracted to more settled comfort and education/employment in modern life so leave their traditional communities
Only…% of Sami manages to remain solely as nomadic reindeer herders, as activities like commercial……….. threaten their lands
