Salts Flashcards
I like this
What is a salt?
An ionic compound made up of a cation other than H⁺ and an anion other than OH⁻ or O²⁻. Salts are products of neutralization reactions between acids and bases
How can you identify a salt from its formula?
It has a metal bonded to a non-metal or a negative group.
It has ammonium bonded to a non-metal or a negative group
List some applications of salts in real life
Fertilizers
Preventing ice formation on roads
Medicines
Food additives and cooking
How are neutralizations involving salts useful in everyday life?
Adjusting soil pH for plants.
Treating indigestion caused by stomach acidity.
Treating insect stings
How is a soluble salt prepared using the titration method?
Titrate an acid with an alkali to determine proportions.
Mix them in correct amounts.
Evaporate water to obtain pure salt crystals
Describe the steps to prepare an insoluble salt
Mix two suitable solutions to form a precipitate.
Filter the precipitate from the solution.
Wash the precipitate with distilled water.
Leave it to dry or place it in a warm oven
What is the process to prepare copper sulfate using sulfuric acid and copper oxide?
Add copper oxide gradually to sulfuric acid while heating and stirring.
Stop adding when no more solid dissolves.
Filter to remove excess base.
Evaporate the filtrate to obtain copper sulfate
