Salivary secretion Flashcards
1
Q
Describe
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic regulation of salivary secretions
- Environmental stimuli
A
Sympathetic
-via sup cervical ganglia => amylase
Parasympathetic
- via X => acing saliva, ductal HCO3 secretion
- via NANC => increased blood flow, my-epithelium contraction
Environmental
- Taste/chewing, hot/cold, pain, smell stimulate salivation
- Sleep, fear, fever, depression inhibits salivation
2
Q
3 main functions of saliva
A
Digestion
- amylase, lipase
- swallowing
Protection
-buffering, antimicrobicidal (increased IgA secretion)
Speech
3
Q
Describe the route of saliva
A
Increased blood flow to sustain active secretion (many NaKATPase)
Acinar cells => isotonic primary saliva
Duct cells => hypotonic K, HCO3 rich secondary section
4
Q
Causes of hypo salivation
A
Gland atrophy due to age
Salivary gland hypofunction
5
Q
Name the 3 salivary glands and their functions
A
Parotid => serous, watery, enzymes
Sublingual => mucus, thick
Submandibular => mixture of serous and mucus
