Salivary Glands and Submandibular Region Flashcards
what are the three major salivary glands?
- parotid
- submandibular
- sublingual
what nerve loops around the submandibular gland duct?
lingual nerve
what gland wraps around the mylohyoid muscle?
submandibular gland
what type of secretions does the submandibular gland supply?
Mixed serous & mucus secretions
what glands have a fascial capsule?
Parotid & submandibular
what is the arterial supply of the submandibular gland?
via submental arteries (branch of facial artery)
what is the smallest of the major salivary glands?
sublingual
what secretions are produced in the sublingual glands?
Mostly mucus secretions (some serous)
where is the sublingual gland located?
Sublingual fossa of mandible (between mandible & hyoglossus)
what are the sublingual & submandibular glands innervated by?
Preganglionic parasympathetic fibres travel to the submandibular ganglion from the chorda tympani via the lingual nerve
where can minor salivary glands be located?
- buccal
- palatal
- lingual
- labial
what are swellings due to blockage of minor salivary glands known as?
mucoceles
how are minor salivary glands innervated?
parasympathetic secretomotor innervation to produce saliva
explain the route of the parasympathetic fibres to innervate minor salivary glands on palate?
—> preganglionic parasympathetic fibres travel to pterygopalatine ganglion via greater petrosal nerve
—> postganglionic fibres travel to the palate via the palatine nerves
what is mumps?
viral infection that presents in children as painful swellings over the salivary glands
what salivary gland is most commonly affected in mumps?
parotid gland
what is the function of suprahyoid muscles?
to elevate the hyoid (swallowing) and larynx (tone production)
what is the origin and insertion of mylohyoid muscle?
originate = mylohyoid line on mandible
insertion = body of hyoid & fibres of opposite mylohyoid
what are the actions of the mylohyoid?
elevates the hyoid & floor of mouth
what are the origin and insertions of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle?
origin = digastric fossa on lower medial aspect of mandible
insertion = intermediate tendon at hyoid
what are the origin and insertions of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle?
origin = mastoid notch
insertion = intermediate tendron at hyoid
