what are the main causes acute bilateral symptoms
MUMPS. also- staphs, TB, HIV, ALL
main causes acute unilateral
mumps, acute parotitis
what causes recurrent unilateral
stones- submandibular 80%, pain and swelling worse on eating, gland may be red swollen tender
what causes chronic bilat symptoms
assoc with dry eyes and mouth - sjogrens. prolonged treatment with oxytetracycline
what can be fixed swellings
malignant, idiopathic, sarcoidosis
what % tumours are in parotid gland
80%. 10% in submandibular.
management salivary gland swelling if present for >1m
remove any salivary gland swelling
treat stones
remove distal stones excise the gland if contains the stone
