inflammation in nose and paranasal sinuses with >2 symptoms one of which is nasal congestion or discharge
symptoms rhinosinusitis
facial pain, decr olfaction, polyps, pus
when is the rhinosinusitis chronic
> 12 weeks
treatment rhinosinusitis
topical corticosteroids and oral antibiotics
causes of nasal congestion in children
adenoids, rhinitis, postnasal space tumour, FB
causes of nasal congestion in adults
deflected nasal septum, granuloma, tricyclics, vasoconstrictors
when should you refer urgently
numb, tooth loss, bleeding, unilateral obstructing mass. may be a tumour
what is allergic rhinosinusitis mediated by
IgE
what antihistamines can be used in allergic rhino
loratadine, nasal steroids- beclometasone
causes of chronic rhinorrhoea, rhinitis
allergies, FB, CSF, bacteria, HIV, CF, RA, age, pregnancy, the pill, B blockers

sites of nasal polyps
middle turbinates, middle meatus, ethmoids
when would you be worried in nasal polyps
unilateral polyp and epistaxis- could be a sign of nasopharyngeal cancer, glioma, lymphoma, sarcoma)
symptoms nasal polyp
watery rhinorrhoea, postnasal drip, obstruction, change in voice, anosmia, sinusitis, headache, snoring, pain
sign nasal polyp
pale, mobile, insensitive to gentle palpation
